Overview:

Hello, My name is Sharon L., and I am a musician and board certified music therapist with a diverse background. I love teaching any subject, but music is my favorite. My method is also diverse, as I focus on the method that works best for each individual student and each of their unique goals. I try to focus on helping my students develop a technique that will help them develop their facility, as well as ergonomically safe. As far as styles, I have played and taught a wide variety, including jazz, pop, rock, soul, classical, R&B and even country. I am extremely patient, attentive in my approach, and I look forward to helping you grow in your musical journey. Sharon

EXPERIENCE

I have many years of experience in teaching music, as well as in the field of music therapy. In fact, I have found that learning music is actually a great technique in the field of music therapy. I My most recent job was at a state hospital where I taught guitar, bass and piano. Before that I taught in homes and online. I have taught to all ages and a variety of cultures. I have worked successfully with advanced students, as well as beginners or individuals with learning challenges. My experience has also been in teaching a variety of musical styles, which I feel helps motivate each individual in their learning process.

METHODS USED

My methods are geared toward the individual. Oftentimes I might start with a methods book for a beginner, but supplement it with musical choices by the individual. In selecting these choices, I find ways to simplify the music so that the student is able to be able to play it. My method is also based on questions that the student might ask. So while we will have an approach that is organized and structured, I find that addressing seemingly unrelated musical questions, can actually be incorporated into the tasks at hand. My method is also quite methodical. I break down new ideas down into smaller pieces. This helps a student experience the success of learning more quickly.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching style is focused on helping each student feel at ease, so that they can better learn. I also am strength-based in.my approach. That is, I focus on each individual’s strengths in learning. This is in contrast to other teaching styles which are geared toward focusing on an individual’s challenges. I have observed that this is the best way to successfully address new musical techniques and concepts. An example might be a child who likes to sing, but is struggling to learn new notes. Perhaps we could make up a new song with the note names. Or for example an older adult who is having memory problems for learning a new piece, but is very good at associating the sound of music with a feeling or image. Perhaps we could take the music in smaller chunks with an image association for each new musical chunk. It makes me very happy to watch each individual begin to understand and harness their own personal strengths during the learning process.
