Instruments: Piano
I've been teaching piano for 13 years, and was trained to do so by a woman who is skilled in the art of pedagogy. That was my first job, and later on I opened my own private studio. At one point I've had up to 45 students, and I've enjoyed working with all of them. I give recitals 4 times a year which helps me see progress in my students. We've tried all kinds of performances, some with themes. The last one I did was a recital with only 70's pop and rock songs. They really enjoyed that one! Read More

Music lessons can incorporate a variety of approaches depending on student preference and abilities. Some students love to read notation. I encourage these students to develop auditory skills through imitation games and improvisation. Other students play by ear and prefer to memorize all pieces. I encourage these students to learn to read notation and to look at the notes when playing familiar pieces. For young children, I create short musical tunes they can read using colors. Read More

When it comes to drumset, I also use a combination of my own lessons and instructional books. For example, I use the famous "Syncopation" book for students when they are ready to learn snare drum and bass drum together. I can also transcribe songs for drumset and I program midi files of music for students when they are having trouble with a particular part of a song or a specific rhythmic pattern or concept. I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. I try to keep the student as interested as possible, some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. My teaching experience started in the YMCA, my church worship band, with friends and friend's kids and evolved into private lessons with friends of friends via word of mouth. I have taught over 50 students in 10 years. All great students but I know 12 who have gone on to play music professionally in solo work, bands, movies and TV. I have performed Folk, Mariachi, Gospel, Christian, Electronica and Classical music all over the country in bands and in my own solo work. Read More
