I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. For piano, I like to use the Alfred books and classical sheet music but I am always open to using other instructional books and songs that the student may want to learn. Read More

I am very positive about teaching my students. I have the knowledge to teach about the theory, technique and flow of the music up through the intermediate level. I don't necessarily stay with the music until it is perfect, because as the student learns more they can always come back to it and play it better. My beginners start on violin, and the first few weeks learning the basics of position and posture. Then I start them with Suzuki Book 1 and supplemental rhythm and theory exercises. After book 1, I assess their progress and drive and either switch them to Barbara Barber's Solos for Young Violinists, or have them stay through Suzuki Book 2 and 3. If my students have interest in viola, I encourage them to stay on violin until they are in high school or even longer (through Mozart concertos) if possible. Read More
