I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. For piano, I like to use the Alfred books and classical sheet music but I am always open to using other instructional books and songs that the student may want to learn. Read More

I also prioritize building relationships with my students so they know that I care about them. Above all, I am passionate about teaching and helping my students succeed. It is essential for a teacher to have a genuine love of teaching drums in order to be successful. This love of teaching will help drive the teacher to do their best and create a positive belief system where students can achieve anything. Read More

I have spent the last 5 years studying to become a great teacher! In December of 2017 I finished my degree in Music Education at Brigham Young University- Idaho, and in August I begin my Masters Degree in String Pedagogy at the University of New Mexico. I am very passionate about being sure my students gain skills through music education that will stay with them beyond what they study with me. My students walk away with skills like perseverance, appreciation for art and culture, dedication, confidence through struggle, and a healthy growth mindset. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

As professional musician, I've been taught trough classical theory training, but as jazz major I also know a lot about jazz theory which gave me both approaches to teaching in the most efficient and comfortable way that the student ask me to, ( not everybody learns in the same way for sure). I'm also excited about learning from my students because it is something that I do like and appreciate a lot. Read More

My supportive approach to teaching begins with finding out where the student is in skill development and assessing the student's desire to learn or need for the subject matter, then assisting them, with materials and techniques, in learning the skills necessary for their chosen goals. For piano students several methods can be used: J.W.Schaum, John Thompson, Alfred Adult Course, etc. . For voice students, the Cocone, Vaccai, and Abt Methods can be applied. Read More

The beginning students always start in a book, which is usually John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", or for the older students, "Bastien's Book for Older Beginners." As they move along, the students often have an idea of what they want to play, and often bring me music, especially the adolescents. I can determine more upon working with the student over time. I definitely customize my lessons for each student, and don't compare one to the other. Some of them have been my students from early childhood to high school graduation. Read More
