I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. In contemporary Native Hawaiian culture, music making is a shared and collaborative space where people come together to create and learn from one another, regardless of how much prior experience you have. My relatives raised me with these understanding, and this is the type of environment that I like emulate and integrate with my lessons and students. I started working with youth as a counselor when I was 15 years old, which soon transitioned to helping students in my high school band integrate concepts and theory that seem at first like a foreign language. During college, as a student majoring in Chinese, I continued to teach guitar lessons during my stays in China. I like to get to know all of my students, it's a unique challenge as a teacher forming individual lesson plans in accordance with the students personality. That is a big part of what makes teaching interesting, and I really enjoy when students and I can work together to play pieces that they want to play. It's not about progressing lightning fast all of the time. Music is more of a marathon and there is a ton of literature out there, so with students I always try to remind them of that and encourage exploring music as a world, and not as a competition with others.
