I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I have have an extremely demanding position with APS, including working with the Mentoring Program where I guided new teachers through their first year, but now, after COVID, I want to focus on rebuilding my private lesson community. I usually have at least a few students who meet me at my home during the week or on weekends. I started working with youth as a counselor when I was 15 years old, which soon transitioned to helping students in my high school band integrate concepts and theory that seem at first like a foreign language. During college, as a student majoring in Chinese, I continued to teach guitar lessons during my stays in China. I began teaching singing lessons as a youth mentor more than a decade ago. I helped these young people develop their voices and performance skills, and supported them to perform songs in front of their school communities and families. I started teaching Balkan singing and percussion workshops with my band a decade ago. Around the same time, I was involved in a program that developed trainings and curricula for group and individual musical facilitation for individuals in hospice, inter-generational community ensembles in nursing care communities, and people with memory loss.
