I began teaching singing lessons as a youth mentor more than a decade ago. I helped these young people develop their voices and performance skills, and supported them to perform songs in front of their school communities and families. I started teaching Balkan singing and percussion workshops with my band a decade ago. I like using the Faber books for children and supplement with classical pieces from Snell. For adults, I see where they are and use adult beginning books or other appropriate material depending on their interests. I usually start each student learning their major chords through the keys as soon as they are physically able, because once you learn your chords, sight reading and other playing becomes much easier. i also teach scales because if you can play your scales you can learn to play in all different keys. I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

I like to bring in all genre's of music including rock and pop, folksongs, movie tunes just to name a few. I find that students learn quickly when learning music that is already familiar to them. I work with tapping rhythms and singing note names, then learn how to pluck the part and then finally add the bow. I keep lessons tailored to each student's needs and skill level.  Students come to private music tutors for many reasons and some do not include a "passion" for the art , itself.
