I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

Depending on the instrument that the student studies and how old they are is how approach teaching them. For example, my voice studentsalways start out learning the same techniques and warm-ups, but where we go from there is based on the age of the voice and how a person wants to learn. With Guitar and Piano I may use a book as a supplement to my teaching, but not as the focal point of my teaching because every learns differently andare ina different place in their journey. From way back in high school when I was the lead singer in a vocal group, I've always been singing, and I can say that singing is beautiful when emitted easily and well, fine as wine most anytime: celebrating births or mourning death, mating or contemplating, closing ranks or giving thanks, praising gods or turning clods of sod, selling soap or trying to cope, making magic moments day or night -- be it a keening wail, a chant or croon, a cheery singalong or a lone moan in the darkest hour before dawn. I cater every lesson to the individual, but I highly emphasize the use of exercises for everyone. For piano students, I love using the Dozen - A - Day books because they include many different 5-finger exercises that are really helpful in warming the fingers. I also will bring in the use of scales and chords, no matter what we're learning, so that students can understand playing music in any key. Read More

I help students to find their forte. I discovered what motivates them through years of teaching in my studio, students' homes, music schools and instrument shops. Highlights of my teaching career include teaching at The L.A. Conservatory of Music and Eubanks Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, and presidency of the Music Teachers Association of California, San Fernando East Valley. While I played at the piano, several congregations have sung God’s praises. Read More
