I adapt to all learning styles and necessary modifications/accommodations they might have in a classroom. I encourage all students to explore and discover their own learning styles and I never use shame or comparison as a motivator. My lessons are always fun and upbeat, with lots of healthy celebration of progress! My students have a practice requirement to pass of any given song, depending on their piece and their level of playing. Read More

While getting my Masters in Music, I assisted teaching Music Theory at the University of Iowa. From there,I taught classes of students at the West Bank School Of Music in Minneapolis. From the Midwest to the Southwest: I taught students at Los Angeles schools and privately there also. I learned what were the best musical works with which to engage students: - Beloved classics by Beethoven, Chopin and others - New Age music by Winston, Einaudi, and Yanni - Gospel works in the best arrangements for a student's level, and - Folk music and works from American History, such as Ragtime, classic Blues, and Jazz-Age music. A relationship with music is a very personal thing. To some it is all about the competition while to others it is simply the joy of playing for one's self. It is my job as a teacher to help each student discover what it is they want to get out of their experience with music and then help to nurture that experience. To treat music like a sport and assume that all students have the same expectations is a mistake that is made all too often with our schools and is, regrettably, all too often the main reason why so many kids choose not to continue with music. I always aim to create an environment that leads students to discover their own passion for music! I provide constructive feedback which always focuses on the positive so the student learns to pay attention to what they are doing right. Setting reachable goals every lesson helps a student feel like they are in control of their own success and builds their motivation to succeed. I believe it is important that the student learn to recognize their own accomplishments so that as they are practicing, they can begin to become the best judges of their own progress and get the most out of their lessons. My teaching experience first began when I was married to a man in the Navy and I was hired to teach private piano lessons on the Yokosuka Naval Base back in 1984. I taught piano to the young and not so young people including Japanese speaking students, bilingual speakers as well as English speaking folks. I had just received my Bachelors in Music the year before and this position was rewarding and challenging. Read More

I try to keep the student as interested as possible, some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily.
