I've been teaching piano for 13 years, and was trained to do so by a woman who is skilled in the art of pedagogy.  That was my first job, and later on I opened my own private studio.  At one point I've had up to 45 students, and I've enjoyed working with all of them.  I give recitals 4 times a year which helps me see progress in my students.  We've tried all kinds of performances, some with themes.  The last one I did was a recital with only 70's pop and rock songs.  They really enjoyed that one! Every student is different and has different dreams, needs and goals. So, my teaching style relies heavily on communicating with my students and their parents, if applicable. My first lesson is focused on setting goals for yourself and unearthing musical dreams and ideas. The following lessons are about hitting that goal as soon as possible. Once that goal is hit, I set another goal with you, and so on. I adapt to all learning styles and necessary modifications/accommodations they might have in a classroom. I encourage all students to explore and discover their own learning styles and I never use shame or comparison as a motivator. My lessons are always fun and upbeat, with lots of healthy celebration of progress! As a teacher, I am a student of teaching. Having studied under a number of very different teachers, I have learned that motivation to practice comes and goes, but passion is what builds a lasting foundation for musicianship. From my jazz training I help students improvise and create their own artistry. From my classical training I help students to learn to sight read, interpret the page correctly, play with a clean sound and play well in an ensemble. From my folk music training, I teach how to play from chord sheets, how to dirty up the sound to match the style and how to play in styles such as bluegrass, jazz, American fiddle, Irish and Scottish, Scandanavian, Klesmer or Classical. I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More
