I recommend that anyone starting to learn music begins at the age of ten simply because of finger strength and focus. I also try to ensure that they practice at a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes a day between lessons to help them reach their full potential. I stand by the "practice makes perfect" saying wholeheartedly. I give small amounts of homework after every lesson and try to create a fun environment for learning that is stress-free. Read More

My professional experience includes trumpet with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the Fabulous Fifties Big Band. My professional teaching experience started in 1986 with teaching students one-on-one. My students have achieved lifelong skills on piano, brass, woodwind, and guitar. I teach in my studio and I travel to family homes. I teach classical, jazz, and gospel music styles. Combining instruction with performance and additional auditions will compliment any student's music experience. Read More

For my vocal students, I start with vocal exercises every lesson and allow them learn to vocal techniques through different vocal exercises. Then I work with my students on the repertoire that they are interested in or repertoire that can help them practice their weak spots. For my piano students, I use many different series (Alfred's, Faber, or some classic repertoire) depending on their level and age. For all students, I will also include music theory when I teach because the students will have a stronger foundation with all of these components, which will enable them to learn better, faster and even by their own. We also learn age-appropriate songs, of course. In lessons with young children, everything is play-based. I make learning experiences into games, and we move between activities quickly to accommodate the kids' attention spans and keep them engaged. I gradually shift my focus to technique and more advanced repertoire once the students reach middle school. For high school and adult voice students, we focus primarily on technique and learning repertoire. In an hour-long lesson, we might spend 15 or so minutes warming up and doing technique exercises, 10 or so minutes working on music theory, and the remainder of the lesson working on one or two songs or arias we've picked together. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I not only use books, but videos, lots of exercises to use when at home and formal presentations. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practicing is what you make of it. Each time you do so clear your mind of all distractions so that way you can concentrate on the task at hand. Remember that practicing is not a chore or job. It's only how to want to perceive it. It can be like pulling teeth if your effort is lacking. It can be a walk in the park if your focus is correct. I for one didn't care for it when I first started. That being said, the older I got and more recitals/gigs I did, you bet I wanted to practice. Take your time, don't get frustrated, and have fun.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Piano is my primary. The love and passion I have for it knows no bounds. I started at age 5 because my brother was getting candy for lessons. As a child I wanted candy as well. As I got older being able to play last at recitals, gigs, church specials, weddings, I where I really and truly blossomed. The art and grace of the piano comes from within my heart and mind. I would never make another instrument my bread and butter. To me personally the piano speaks to the heart and soul more than any other music instrument.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Classical is my favorite to play. This is where ALL music genres have come from. Whether it is country, pop, rock, jazz, hip hop, etc. Music started with Mozart, Beethoven, Bach. Each piece or movement of a song tells us a story. Whether sad, happy, melancholy, joyful. It truly paints a picture of vivid colors and imagination. Tying all the elements together from strings to percussion, to woodwinds and brass. Each period in classical music differs from one another. This is why we have so many different genres in today's music.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I joined my school orchestra at 12 wanting to be an accompanist for them. Little did I know that I would take up violin and viola. I was absolutely terrible at both of them until I started to take lessons and incorporate what I was learning in piano to the other stringed instruments. My strive for greatness in all 3 was unimaginable. I wanted to be the best at them all. Each one gave me something different. The piano was my full orchestra on 88 keys, but the violin and viola where more personal because of how hard they are to play.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Music is extremely strong in my family. My brother and I are the most gifted/talented. We have done over 20 weddings and 100s of church services. He is a orchestra professor in a different state and plays 7 instruments including (his main) cello, electric and acoustic guitar and drums. You can just imagine the fun my parents had with my brother and I playing all the time. My mother took piano and guitar when she was young and my father was part of the school choir. Music is a cornerstone in my family.
