In addition to having performed on thousands of stages around the world over the last 15 years, I have been teaching private lessons in percussion for the last 10 years. I have experience teaching individual and group lessons, in some cases with groups of over 50 students. In addition to lessons which address the practical concerns involved in beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of drums, percussion, & cello, I teach lessons in structuring performances (aimed mostly at bands looking to take their live production to the next level), prepping for studio time, tailoring performances to their setting (studio, venues small & large, workshops), and techniques for learning large volumes of material quickly. Methods are tailored around the individual needs and goals of the student. Fundamentals in music theory are balanced with repertoire and lessons focus on developing practice skills that the student can use outside the lesson. The Suzuki method is ideal for beginning flute students, particularly young students. This approach allows students to become comfortable holding the instrument, producing a solid tone, and training the ear, before introducing notation. For beginning pianists, the Bastien series works well in terms of breaking down repertoire into manageable pieces and marking students' progress in early study. Read More

My methods are different for every student, but I always start with fundamentals. This includes scales, exercises to improve sound and intonation, reading, writing, improvisation, and most importantly listening. Depending on the path the student choses, some areas will be focused on more than others. I will often introduce more advanced concepts early if the student displays interest in them. I am not the kind of instructor who will say "play your etudes first and then we can talk about improvisation." I almost quit shortly after I started music because I had an instructor with that outlook. Read More

Recently I was hired as piano instructor for Quartertonez Music, in Washington DC. Also, I have had experience teaching and studying music education under my high school mentor, renowned music teacher Tim Savage; I was his student-teacher for a semester course at St. Lawrence University. Additionally, throughout my experience as his music student, his teaching approach has infused music education and facilitation lessons within the musical instruction itself. My past teaching experience also includes being a Drill Instructor for the Italian Department at Vassar College for two years during my time as an undergrad (I not only "ran drills" for students who had already started learning the material, but also had to compensate in a variety of ways for the unsuccessful, dysfunctional, or half-hearted engagement that is typical in a foreign language class). I have been teaching since 1984 and now I teach from my home studio. I am not trying to make my students the best in the world but I want them to love music. My students have accomplished many goals. They have all had the chance to perform in recitals. Some have won scholarships to private schools and colleges, gotten to perform at Disney World to record music for a movie soundtrack and have won top music awards from their high school graduations. My teaching style is integrative and interactive. I tend to write, record, and encourage local performances for my student base. I like for students and parents to have something to show for their efforts in music, whether it be a recording or performance. I tend to get my students more excited than most because I prioritize understanding my students’ taste in music. My past students have commented that this was their favorite part about our lessons, was the fact that we were playing music the student actually likes. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practicing is what you make of it. Each time you do so clear your mind of all distractions so that way you can concentrate on the task at hand. Remember that practicing is not a chore or job. It's only how to want to perceive it. It can be like pulling teeth if your effort is lacking. It can be a walk in the park if your focus is correct. I for one didn't care for it when I first started. That being said, the older I got and more recitals/gigs I did, you bet I wanted to practice. Take your time, don't get frustrated, and have fun.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Piano is my primary. The love and passion I have for it knows no bounds. I started at age 5 because my brother was getting candy for lessons. As a child I wanted candy as well. As I got older being able to play last at recitals, gigs, church specials, weddings, I where I really and truly blossomed. The art and grace of the piano comes from within my heart and mind. I would never make another instrument my bread and butter. To me personally the piano speaks to the heart and soul more than any other music instrument.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Classical is my favorite to play. This is where ALL music genres have come from. Whether it is country, pop, rock, jazz, hip hop, etc. Music started with Mozart, Beethoven, Bach. Each piece or movement of a song tells us a story. Whether sad, happy, melancholy, joyful. It truly paints a picture of vivid colors and imagination. Tying all the elements together from strings to percussion, to woodwinds and brass. Each period in classical music differs from one another. This is why we have so many different genres in today's music.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I joined my school orchestra at 12 wanting to be an accompanist for them. Little did I know that I would take up violin and viola. I was absolutely terrible at both of them until I started to take lessons and incorporate what I was learning in piano to the other stringed instruments. My strive for greatness in all 3 was unimaginable. I wanted to be the best at them all. Each one gave me something different. The piano was my full orchestra on 88 keys, but the violin and viola where more personal because of how hard they are to play.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Music is extremely strong in my family. My brother and I are the most gifted/talented. We have done over 20 weddings and 100s of church services. He is a orchestra professor in a different state and plays 7 instruments including (his main) cello, electric and acoustic guitar and drums. You can just imagine the fun my parents had with my brother and I playing all the time. My mother took piano and guitar when she was young and my father was part of the school choir. Music is a cornerstone in my family.
