I am an experienced and passionate musician who teaches for the love of music, not for the love of competition. I hold degrees in music education and saxophone from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and humanities from California State at Dominguez Hills, as well as a number of year's study in saxophone and jazz improvisation and theory at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee. I have been published through Plank Road Publishing and Music K-8 Magazine and have performed at venues large and small, as well as theatres, festivals and clubs from the Midwest to Florida and ultimately to New Mexico. I facilitated individual an group musical collaborations, and helped train people to do the same via workshops I facilitated at conferences. I have also led community singalongs, and taught individual students vocals and percussion over this time. I'm a big believer that everyone can sing and everyone can drum, and that music is a gift inherent to being human that we all can share and rejoice in. Whenever I meet with someone, I feel it's always best to get to know them and ask them "why music?". From there it sparks a conversation, and we start setting goals - which is super important! This is how we check in with ourselves along the way to make sure that the student is getting the most out of their lessons. I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. For piano, I like to use the Alfred books and classical sheet music but I am always open to using other instructional books and songs that the student may want to learn. Read More

As the student progresses I will add sheet music or may have a book the student can borrow. I will ask the parent to by a book on occasion especially if the child has a particular interest that would benefit from it, There is a wide variety of materials that a well suited for private lessons, but I have used the Strictly Strings" series of books and collaborative materials.
