I've been in the field of music education, production and performance for over 20 years. I have spent half of my life helping others find their path in music. One of the most important lessons I have learned as a teacher is that...."people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care!!!!" I understands that building a relationship with a student is just as important as the information I teach. Read More

My Grandmother inspired me to play piano. My church taught me to sing. In high school I was involved in band and choir and was selected to tour Europe with a college group. To this day I work with foreign exchange students. In college I continued my musical studies although I majored in Public Relations. This allowed me me to take classes such as oral interpretation and work in radio/TV which enhanced my performing skills. Read More

I am a sixth semester student at Berklee College of Music, dual majoring in saxophone performance and jazz composition, and have studied with many inspiring professors as well as learned from many amazing educators. Since entering Berklee I have been able to not only study the material and concepts, but I have also gotten to study professors and how they educate students of all different backgrounds, all different levels of understanding, and how they navigate teaching a class with students who are all at different stages and levels of grasping material. I have been teaching music lessons as a music therapist since 2007 and have much experience with adapted lessons for students with developmental disabilities and other limitations.  I started teaching typical lessons in addition to adapted lessons in 2013 and it has been an added joy for me. I love teaching basic music lessons and music theory to children developing strong musical roots. I encourage a regular practice schedule for all of my students to help develop strong habits and engraving music in each of their lives. Instruments: Piano Cello Music Keyboard

I started teaching when I was an undergrad in college. I've taught students of different ages with different personalities. I found it important for myself as a teacher to change my teaching styles according to each student. Using the vocabulary or description that the student understands and give them what they need/want is a better way for them to learn. There's no short cut to success. If you want to learn an instrument, regular practice and lessons are required. Read More

In order to succeed at the keyboard, a student's technique must be ahead of their literature. This is why I use a well-developed system of technical exercises that are easy to understand and implement that allows the student to quickly gain mastery of the instrument. These techniques were thoroughly developed and taught by my mentor, Dr. Jill Sprenger, and I have seen students of all types succeed with them. I also use a self-paced program of theory skills and ear-training exercises that complement the wide variety of literature that excites each student. Read More

I have worked with many music methods and numerous curriculums: Alfred, Faber, Piano Pronto, Hal Leonard, Bastian, Eric Steiner Rice, Faber, Dogs and Birds, Mr. Everybody's Musical Apt., Sandy Hoffman, Carol Tournquist etc. to name a few.  I start out with a general introduction and progress to choosing the core curriculum according to the student's ability and desire in music.  Music is a vast Science and lessons plans will be created around your goal in music rather than a rigid method, though we will adhere to curriculum to be sure that we are thorough and you receive a complete music education.  I have general curriculum, genre' specific curriculum such as Jazz, Blues etc. as well as curriculum geared toward training Church Musicians. Instruments: Flute Piccolo

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Set a practice schedule of what you want to work on. Do not waste time on replaying parts that are easy and only focus your time on the difficult parts. This will help you finish a practice session faster and efficiently.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child really wants to play flute and you see them struggling, have them start lessons as soon as possible. There may be a chance they will get frustrated and give up the flute because they dont have some one to teach them proper technique. If your child is playing and trying to challenge themself, they may want to take lessons to excel faster in learning and learn difficult material.

When will I start to see results?
Each student learns at a different pace. Each week there will be goals and it is up to the student to practice out of lesson time in order apply techniques learned during lesson.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My elementary school teacher inspired me to play flute. She demonstrated each instrument and when she played pink panther on the flute, I was sold. Each instructor I had inspired me to work harder to become a better player

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
The band teacher in elementary school played the Pink Panther theme and I wanted to learn how to play that piece. Eventually I practiced more and fell in love with it.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of making first chair in All State Band during high school. I practiced for hours each day and was determined to make it!

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Ive had students make it in to all count honor band, all state and received superior ratings a Solo and Ensemble. They followed my advice in the pieces and worked hard to apply those techniques.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Defintely the technical skills were difficult to develop but with practice over time became easier.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Trevor Wye method books, Taffanel method and Rubanks 1 and 2. The Trevor Wye and Taffanel have challenging tone and technical development and the Rubanks books are great for beginner-intermediate studies.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I start out with long tones, scales, technical warm ups and then I move on to specific parts in the pieces that are difficult for me and work on that.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite style is contemporary. It introduces modern techniques such as singing and playing flute or pitch bending to the flute.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I started playing Oboe secondary because my school needed one in the other bands the school had to offer.

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
From 4th grade, flute has been my escape from reality. If I was having a bad day I would sit down with my flute and practice. It made me happy. When I got into high school is when I realized that I wanted to make it my career.
