My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time , and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio and music schools for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. With 20 years experience in vocal music as a teacher and performer, Carolyn continues to prepare students for a life-long love of singing. Carolyn's students earn excellent scores at competitions such as the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). They enjoy major roles in school musicals and are ready for college level auditions. Carolyn started musical training in Baltimore, Maryland's Peabody Conservatory where she studied piano, ear-training, and classical dance.Carolyn was a voice major in the Fine Arts Department of Carnegie Mellon University and graduated with a BFA.  I have also taught general music from kindergarten up through 5th grade, and assisted bands at the university level.  My performance experience has taken me to many wonderful places--College bowl games and the NCAA Tournaments to international hotspots such as Bogota, Columbia and even as far away as China.  I have also been fortunate enough to perform with musical icons such as Doc Severinson, Mariachi Cobre, Byron Stripling, John Fedchock, Bobby Shew, Five by Design, Club Swing, the Harry James Orchestra, Andre Williams, and notable groups such as the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra, Phil Campo and the "Loose Change" Jazz band, the Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and many others. I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. I taught concert band, jazz band, marching band, string orchestra, full orchestra, and general music. I have conducted a women's chorale and taught college as well.
