I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

I am a versatile music teacher. As an undergraduate at Ithaca College, I learned each band and orchestra instrument from the college instructor. For example, I learned to play the oboe from the oboe professor. We had to make our own reeds and use them to play our final exam. Through this rigorous training, I learned to play all major scales and high school level music on the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French Horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and percussion. For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's All-in-one Piano Course books. These books combine repertoire and theory, thereby cutting down on the number of books a new student needs to purchase. I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. With 20 years experience in vocal music as a teacher and performer, Carolyn continues to prepare students for a life-long love of singing. Carolyn's students earn excellent scores at competitions such as the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). They enjoy major roles in school musicals and are ready for college level auditions.
