I encourage these students to develop auditory skills through imitation games and improvisation. Other students play by ear and prefer to memorize all pieces. Having studied under a number of very different teachers, I have learned that motivation to practice comes and goes, but passion is what builds a lasting foundation for musicianship. I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses.
