For entry level percussionists, I start on a practice pad with the basic drum rudiments (rolls, paradiddles, flams, etc.). After learning these rudiments, I will help the student identify these techniques in their favorite songs, which we will then learn to play together. After successfully performing songs in several styles, I will task the student with creating their own groove, which we can then turn into a full song. For intermediate drummers, I will have them showcase their skill level to appropriately develop a curriculum that will keep them challenged, engaged, and progressing in their musical journey. For beginners, I always start with very basic technique elements such as the proper way of holding the drumsticks, how to position the drum set and having a proper posture while playing to build good habits right from the beginning. From there, I like to work on simple rudiments, and connect this with how to use the rudiments to play simple grooves. I will also bring charts with written grooves of popular songs and we will start playing along with songs, to get used to the feeling of playing in a musical context. Read More

I teach all ages and skill levels, from drumpad to drumset. No matter how young the student is, learning how to play an instrument and read music is invaluable. I help my younger students prepare for middle school and high school level orchestra, and my older students for college music auditions and solo pieces. With my adult students I help them schedule music in their busy lives. There is no reason to put off playing an instrument if it's something you always wanted to do. Read More

I think the most important part of teaching is developing a positive mentoring relationship to the student. My favorite teachers always went above and beyond to not only educate me on their favorite subject, but also to show me life lessons along the way and listen to my problems. Ultimately I know that not every one of my students will become a professional musician, and that is okay! I do want them to develop a positive relationship with rhythm and music, and an ability to enjoy these things in anything they listen to. Read More
