I was also a section leader at Cresskill High School, where I led, trained, and directed the drumline. Through this experience, I have helped unlock my students' potential and build them into more well-rounded drummers. We start by doing proper warm up exercises followed by learning or practicing rudiments. We work on our grip of the sticks and our movements while drumming. In other words, I teach economy of movement for maximum energy. If a student is flailing their arms, we talk about a more fluid movement by utilizing the wrists and incorporating finger control. Then we move on to reading out of instructional books which is then followed by practical application on the drum sets.With a beginner student I find Basix Syncopation for Drums by Alfred Publishing to be a very effective tool. I usually don't believe in rules. I never really followed the rules as a musician and just played how I felt because of my gift. I make music sound more colorful and bright and I can add any instrument to music and make it sound good. Technically, I would just teach beginners how to play whatever instrument they want to learn. For example, if you want to learn how to play the piano, I will sit down with you the first day and we will go over how to play the piano and you will automatically be playing notes and chords after the first session. For beginners, I start with Alfred's beginning drum method, and as they progress I incorporate my own additions to the material, as well as digging into the interests of the student. I am big on sharing recordings with students and introducing them to worlds of music they have likely not heard before.
