Overview:

I am a freelance drummer based in New York City, and I have been performing regularly since 2004. As a performer, I've been fortunate to gain valuable experience performing, touring and recording with numerous bands in varying genres, which has allowed me to travel the world to perform and teach. I have performed at a number of New York City's top jazz venues, including Dizzy's Club, Birdland Jazz Club, The Jazz Standard, The Jazz Gallery, Smalls Jazz Club, and others. I received my Master of Music degree from University of Miami in 2015, and I have been an in-demand, full-time musician ever since. I have taught at a number of small colleges in classroom settings, as well as private lessons, and I am passionate about allowing my students to learn the fundamentals of technique and sound, while also having the freedom to explore and create.

EXPERIENCE

I've been passionate about teaching drums since I was in college, and I was thankful to have great instructors during my formative years that gave me a great foundation for getting new drummers started in a way that is fun, effective, and non-intimidating. A solid foundation in snare drum technique and basic sight-reading is important for all beginners, but I also find it very effective to teach the drums through learning songs with my students. Finding musical ways to apply rudimental exercises and independence drills is the key to feeling progression in lessons. I always love to see what songs my students are interested in, and helping them to learn how to drum along.

METHODS USED

I teach basic stick technique using George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control, and I have numerous hand exercises based on patterns from that book that I warm up with every lesson. Starting with snare drum and basic hand technique also will incorporate rhythm reading, and basic limb independence. When my students start behind the kit, they will start by applying some of those hand exercises to the drumset, and also learn how to orchestrate and play basic grooves. Four-limb coordination is the biggest hurdle of playing drums at the beginning, and I have a fun, and musical way for students to get the hang of it quickly. Everybody learns differently, and I try to cater my materials and lesson plans to each individual student to address their musical needs.

LESSON STYLE

I feel that organization is key to success in lessons, and I keep clear records of all lessons and exercises that each of my students have worked on with me. However I do like to keep things low key and fun! Music, and drums in particular, take a lot of focus and repetition to improve, and I always stress the importance of practicing at home outside of the lessons. It's always my hope that I can give my students the information and the drive to continue to find the way to their sound even if they no longer are studying with me. I'm always inspired by the ideas that my students have as well, and I always try to allow time for them to show me any things that they have discovered on the instrument on their own, and to see if we can develop it into something more. I also hope to my students will come away with the ability to see the drumset as not just a rhythmic instrument, but a melodic and harmonic instrument as well.

I had the honor of having Evan as my very first private lesson teacher before he moved to Florida. He gave me a solid foundation for growing my skills and made it fun and exciting. He is so passionate about music and teaching it is truly infectious. Anyone who has the opportunity to get to know Evan as a musician, teacher, or friend is truly lucky.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
