I'm a Brooklyn based drummer and instructor who loves to teach. In 2015, I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies with an emphasis in drumset performance. I was afforded the chance to work with and learn from many great musicians and notable jazz drummers such as Jeff Hamilton, Matt Wilson, John Riley, Jeff Coffin, etc. I have led many gigging bands, and have a lot of experience playing out and working with other musicians. I have over 10 years experience teaching drums and music production, which I began after moving to New York around 2010. I like to teach my students based on their needs, depending on age and speed of learning. I am very big in teaching deep fundamentals, such as snare drum rudiments and different drum grooves. The lessons need to be fun! I try to balance out 'fun' practicing and focus, goal-driven exercises, which includes learning the drum parts to music the student likes. Read More

In my experience teaching for the past twelve years I have realized a few things including the fact that my methods work. I teach my students to read drum music well enough that most of the younger ones end up playing in the school band. We also play along with real music which I believe is a totally important part of my lesson schedule and it's fun for the student. Read More

My teaching style is heavily student focused: By listening to my student's voice and choice, I want to work together to create musical goals for them that we can develop as we progress. While I believe in creating a learning environment focused on intrinsic motivation, I hope my positive attitude and love for music can serve as a source of inspiration for my students! The most important aspect of any lesson is the joy that we bring to it, which is crucial to us developing musical skills and beautiful music. Read More

I will always listen to what students want to learn and play but at the same time will introduce them to music they aren’t familiar with. To be a great musician you have to be well rounded in different styles of music. I will also encourage students to express their emotions through what they play because I believe music can be very therapeutic and sometimes people have a hard to expressing themselves through talking. My passion for teaching comes from two main sources: First of all, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a student progress, enjoy what he's doing and sound better every single lesson! My love for teaching also comes from the fact that I learn so much from this process! Every student gives me a new perspective on the drums and sets new challenges to tackle, which makes this such an invigorating experience! Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
In order to practice effectively one must have a goal. This goal could be as simple as learning out to play quarter notes or as big as performing at Madison Square Garden. From there you identify all of the steps that you must take in order achieve that goal, and break it down in to smaller achievable steps that will inevitably lead to achieving that goal. One of the most important lessons that I learned about practicing is that you can never practice the basics enough. The more time you spend building a solid foundation, the more you will progress and the easier you will find it to move into more complex material.

When will I start to see results?
Everyone will start to see results at their own pace. For students who are just beginning they will see results much faster and much more frequently than a more experienced player. This is because as a musician progresses their goals will become more ambitious and harder to achieve. Therefore taking a longer time to achieve them. However, they become that much more rewarding when they are accomplished. A personal philosophy of mine is not to compare oneself to any other musicians. The focus should be on creating your own unique sound, and learning how to speak with your own voice.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My first drum teacher was the reason that I pursued music the way I did. He created this environment in the class room that made it feel as if I could trust him as if he were family. We would occasionally have lessons where we would just talk for half an hour about music and where we wanted to be with our music in ten years. This allowed me to start to think about my future, and helped me not only to learn music, but to develop life goals, and pursue those on a human level, outside of my music. This teacher helped me to realize my full potential in life, and helped to guide me into attending Berklee College of Music with an open mind and unparalleled ambition that transferred over to many other aspects of my life.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I can't quite pinpoint why it is that I chose the drum set. It was calling me to it, when you're a thirteen year old boy it's kind of hard not to want to play the drums. But, I believe it was the animalistic nature of the instrument that made me want to play it. I wanted to play loud, and I wanted to perform, but the drums gave me a safety net as well. I didn't have to be at the front of the stage with nothing but a microphone. I could do everything for the audience that the singer could, but from behind a drum set. It gave me a sense of security while still allowing me to be the performer that I am. After a couple of years I learned that the drums, as animalistic as they can be, can also be played sweetly, and it was the unlimited possibilities of what a drum can do that keeps me going to this day.
