I grew up in Naples, Italy and I started playing drums since I was about 5. By the time I was 14 I was already playing in the national music scene. After moving to study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (NL) at 18, I quickly started to be part of a more intrnational scene, and by the time I got a scholarship to pursue my second Master degree at Manhattan School of Music in New York, I was already starting playing with some of the most prominent names of the music scene. My teaching career began nearly 20 years ago as the assistant director of a concert band for senior citizens! I was about halfway through college when a music education professor asked me if I'd like the opportunity. From there I went on to teach full time or as a clinician and many middle and high schools in the DFW area, as well as Baylor University. My time living abroad in Brazil and Korea gave me the opportunity to work with both younger (elementary) and older (adult) students in very diverse environments. Read More

It is very important to make each student progress at his or her own pace. This is done by setting realistic goals for each student at each lesson, keeping them inspired and interested in learning more. When you acknowledge students based on their accomplishments, it helps to fuel them a desire to progress and make them interested in learning more. Finding out what are his/her inspirations it makes it easier to fit my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

I've found that after the preliminary work of getting a base skill set and familiarity with the instrument, technically proficiency, etc, it helps to let the student guide me in how i aid them on their journey and find where their passion is, in the great world of music. The most rewarding thing that can happen as a teacher is to see a student develop their own musicality and achieve their personal goals. Read More

I first started teaching in the summer of 2002 when a friend from church wanted his son to learn drums. His desire was for his son to play one day on the praise team. Thankfully he stuck with it and still plays for the church to this day. That moment made me realize I have a gift for teaching. Throughout college I continued to teach out of my studio and developed my skills even more when I moved back to Maryland in 2009. Read More

To me, the student's journey ALWAYS comes first, and I believe that is why I have been able to have been teaching for 20 years. Most of my students stay with me for up to 11 years as I teach them how to speak music fluently by studying several genres and perhaps multiple instruments. I am extremely passionate about each of my students, being very diligent to 'see' the individual for who they are, sculpt and carve a very unique custom path to success on their instrument. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
In order to practice effectively one must have a goal. This goal could be as simple as learning out to play quarter notes or as big as performing at Madison Square Garden. From there you identify all of the steps that you must take in order achieve that goal, and break it down in to smaller achievable steps that will inevitably lead to achieving that goal. One of the most important lessons that I learned about practicing is that you can never practice the basics enough. The more time you spend building a solid foundation, the more you will progress and the easier you will find it to move into more complex material.

When will I start to see results?
Everyone will start to see results at their own pace. For students who are just beginning they will see results much faster and much more frequently than a more experienced player. This is because as a musician progresses their goals will become more ambitious and harder to achieve. Therefore taking a longer time to achieve them. However, they become that much more rewarding when they are accomplished. A personal philosophy of mine is not to compare oneself to any other musicians. The focus should be on creating your own unique sound, and learning how to speak with your own voice.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My first drum teacher was the reason that I pursued music the way I did. He created this environment in the class room that made it feel as if I could trust him as if he were family. We would occasionally have lessons where we would just talk for half an hour about music and where we wanted to be with our music in ten years. This allowed me to start to think about my future, and helped me not only to learn music, but to develop life goals, and pursue those on a human level, outside of my music. This teacher helped me to realize my full potential in life, and helped to guide me into attending Berklee College of Music with an open mind and unparalleled ambition that transferred over to many other aspects of my life.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I can't quite pinpoint why it is that I chose the drum set. It was calling me to it, when you're a thirteen year old boy it's kind of hard not to want to play the drums. But, I believe it was the animalistic nature of the instrument that made me want to play it. I wanted to play loud, and I wanted to perform, but the drums gave me a safety net as well. I didn't have to be at the front of the stage with nothing but a microphone. I could do everything for the audience that the singer could, but from behind a drum set. It gave me a sense of security while still allowing me to be the performer that I am. After a couple of years I learned that the drums, as animalistic as they can be, can also be played sweetly, and it was the unlimited possibilities of what a drum can do that keeps me going to this day.
