I believe in keeping the lessons very interactive by making sure that it is not just the student playing/singing. I keep the lesson flowing from one activity, or song, to the next by using a common goal throughout the lesson. I make a goal for each lesson known to the student so that the student can feel successful and accomplished at the end of every lesson. Read More

I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to learning an instrument. I utilize a variety of different methods for the variety of instruments I teach (guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, voice). I like to meet with my students and get an idea of the pace in which the learn and how much effort they want to put in. Along with working on music the student wants to learn, I have a wide variety of books as well as my own handouts prepared for my students. Read More

Constantly changing. Lessons have to be able to have some spontaneity. The goal is to inspire, to teach, to communicate and to share the love of singing and playing that has brought tremendous enrichment to my own life. Read More

For beginners, I typically start with the 24 Italian Aria book. We pick a song that the student likes best and work on that. At the same time, we also work on a song that interests the student within reason. There must be a basic grasp of the fundamentals of technique. First and foremost, I believe in healthy and safe singing. I believe that there is healthy and safe singing in every genre, but one must have an understanding of bel canto singing first to be able to sing properly in every genre. Read More

I teach both voice and guitar. As an instructor of voice I start with Breathing exercises, posture, and ear training. I take methods from "The Singing Book" by Maribeth Dayme Cynthia Vaughn. With children, I gage how well their grasping the fundamentals before learning songs. Once we've gotten their we move forward to learning about different techniques. What I enjoy most is getting to know my student. Often times students show / tell me what their interested in learning, as each student is a different learner! Read More

Every student is different, so my approach to each student is tailored to their goals. Young students need more guidance than older students and are encouraged to broaden their musical tastes and explore what will ignite their musical imaginations. Some of my students are working toward auditions such as The Voice and we focus on song choice, technique and performance. I teach every one of my students as though they were my only student. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I once took a masterclass with a clarinetist who asked the music students what the number one reason people didn’t practice. Some students said Laziness, others said Lack of Motivation. I raised my hand and said, “Fear.” Fear is the number one reason why any person who needs to practice something might procrastinate, waste time, or just give up completely. Fear of failure, or even fear of success, can paralyze a musician of any age.
I always encourage my students to acknowledge what fear is keeping them from practicing, meditate on the answer, and then move past it. We will work together to find a way toward consistency. Understand that not every method works for everyone. It takes time to figure out what works for you. I have many ideas that I use to help students overcome practice and performance anxiety, including making practice charts, taking breaks, positive self talk, and rewards!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe a child is ready to start lessons if their parent is willing to learn with them and continue teaching even when the instructor isn’t there. A three year old can learn music theory, but not if their grownup isn’t willing to practice with them every day for even just five minutes. An older child still needs help staying on track, and that’s when the adult(s) in their life come in. Even if your child is a musical genius, prodigies still need to practice! We will talk about what to practice and for how long based on age and experience in every lesson, and I will adjust this as we go along.
When will I start to see results?
When it comes to music, there is always more to learn! But, in my experience, being result oriented tends to rush students of any age into sloppy techniques, lack of music theory awareness, and ultimately frustration with practice. Being willing to practice the same scales every day slowly and correctly while increasing tempo gradually is more important than being able to play Für Elise on day one.
However, I understand a student’s potential passion for performance opportunities. With voice and piano, I teach skills that allow students to learn chord structures and keys in a way that enables them to learn new songs quickly and easily (with practice) while not throwing out the importance of music theory knowledge.
