Many my students have improved their struggles through piano lessons. Each year we have our annual piano recital at the National Opera America Center. Students can learn and improve their skills through preparation and performing on stage at the beautiful recital hall. I have been teaching voice students from age 12 to adult. They all learn singing for different purposes, and some of them were even being criticized as tone death in the past, but I never give up to help any students who love to sing. Read More

I have a lot of music at my disposal to help train my students from the very beginner level to the intermediate advance level. I believe in incorporating classical training to all types of music in order to train the healthiest of singers. Though I am a classical and Legit musical theatre singer by trade, I have knowledge in all works and genres of music and can easily adapt to the genre the student is wanting to focus on. Read More

Music has been a part of my life from as early as I can remember. After graduating from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in 2006 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance, I have continued to perform and broaden my range of musical experiences through diverse engagement in both the classical and non-conventional realms. Performing around the world and working with some of todays brightest and most acclaimed singers, ensembles, and conductors such as Leon Botstein, Dale Duesing, Karen Brunssen, James Hall, Warren Jones, Phyllis Hoffman, Pro Arte, Bard Festival Chorus, Canticum Scholare, New York City Chorale, VOCES8, and many others has been a privilege and immense learning experience. Typically I start off gaining some insight into my students. Who do they look up to, the type of music they're into, what genres they want to improve in, etc... After gathering that information I ask them to sing a song that they enjoy or that means something to them. Based off of that I've gathered a substantial amount of information about their voice and their preferences to develop a curriculum/course outline for them. Read More

I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like. If they have a song they'd want to learn, we would practice that song and work on technique so that they can perform it in a healthy and confident way. Read More

All of my students work on tried and true Bel Canto and Swedish techniques. I will give each student special vocal exercises to work on at home. I generally assign songs from The 24 Italian Songs and Arias songbook and I use Musical Theater Anthologies. Some of my more advanced High School students work on Opera arias. Read More

I love teaching voice! I see singing as a full body experience with a free and easy technique. I love to make singers into better versions of themselves and better artists. I am a strong believer in the fact that singing should always be done out of love and fun in the persuit of excellence. I am a graduate from the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School. I have an undergraduate, masters and artist diploma from the above schools. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I once took a masterclass with a clarinetist who asked the music students what the number one reason people didn’t practice. Some students said Laziness, others said Lack of Motivation. I raised my hand and said, “Fear.” Fear is the number one reason why any person who needs to practice something might procrastinate, waste time, or just give up completely. Fear of failure, or even fear of success, can paralyze a musician of any age. I always encourage my students to acknowledge what fear is keeping them from practicing, meditate on the answer, and then move past it. We will work together to find a way toward consistency. Understand that not every method works for everyone. It takes time to figure out what works for you. I have many ideas that I use to help students overcome practice and performance anxiety, including making practice charts, taking breaks, positive self talk, and rewards!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe a child is ready to start lessons if their parent is willing to learn with them and continue teaching even when the instructor isn’t there. A three year old can learn music theory, but not if their grownup isn’t willing to practice with them every day for even just five minutes. An older child still needs help staying on track, and that’s when the adult(s) in their life come in. Even if your child is a musical genius, prodigies still need to practice! We will talk about what to practice and for how long based on age and experience in every lesson, and I will adjust this as we go along.

When will I start to see results?
When it comes to music, there is always more to learn! But, in my experience, being result oriented tends to rush students of any age into sloppy techniques, lack of music theory awareness, and ultimately frustration with practice. Being willing to practice the same scales every day slowly and correctly while increasing tempo gradually is more important than being able to play Für Elise on day one. However, I understand a student’s potential passion for performance opportunities. With voice and piano, I teach skills that allow students to learn chord structures and keys in a way that enables them to learn new songs quickly and easily (with practice) while not throwing out the importance of music theory knowledge.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
