I guess my point is, I can play any instrument and if I had more time in the world, I could practice more. I took all of the music classes in my college and I passed with flying colors (except brown because he has a broken wing so he can't fly that much, but other colors flew high). I think focusing on the basics is very important, but I think it is equally important to engage the student. I always want to know what type of music the student is interested in so they can learn how to play it. Combining basics plus their own interests is something that is very important for me. It is very important to make each student progress at his or her own pace. This is done by setting realistic goals for each student at each lesson, keeping them inspired and interested in learning more. When you acknowledge students based on their accomplishments, it helps to fuel them a desire to progress and make them interested in learning more.
