In 2015 I graduated from Berklee College of Music in Drum-set performance and in 2017 I graduated from NYU with a masters in performance. As a member of the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, in 2011 I had the privilege and honor to perform with GRAMMY AWARD and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Wayne Shorter, as well as GRAMMY AWARD winners, Joe Lovano, John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington and George Garzone at the Global Jazz Summit For Humanity and Peace event. My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I taught music theory, ear training, and vocal music. Right after I graduated college I was accepted into the music education program at Teachers College Columbia University where I received my masters degree in music education along with certification in New York state to teach Pre-K through 12. For beginner level students I start out with learning how to strike the drum as well as simple coordination exercises and intro level drum beats. After the student can grasp basic exercises, I introduce learning how to read music which will lead to reading out of various drum set instructional as well as technique books. For more advanced students I work out of books focusing on furthering coordination and technique, widening the ability to play different styles, chart reading with play alongs, soloing as well as the students interests. Being able to read music well allows you to pursue any type of written music you want to learn. Daily experimentation on your instrument can teach you more about the instrument and yourself than any book or teacher. These are the three main aspects that I focus in my own development (I'm still learning too!). Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch.
