I build each lesson around the needs of each student and what they would like to accomplish. I help them set reasonable practice and achievement goals. If there is a style of music they would like to learn or a particular song, I try to fit it in with the lesson and use it as a teaching tool as well. I teach according to my students needs. I have an assortment of different tools in my arsenal, However not all tools work for every singer universally. It is about mixing and matching the specific tool to a specific student. My over all goal is to create a universal language of the voice through physical exercises that allow singers to understand their voice. I love the moment when a child sees the inside of a piano for the first time, those moments of discovery, the "AHH HA!" moments. With my voice students, I especially love helping young artists find their authentic voice. I enjoy watching them grow and become more self-confident. For my first class with my students, I typically would get to know them in terms of their goals, experience as a singer, and get to know where they are in their pursuit of those goals they set for themselves. After which, I would do warm-up exercises, vowel, and consonant work, and establish fundamentals of vocal techniques for the desired genre. Once the student feels more comfortable with their voice, I would suggest an introductory repertoire (usually an Art Song) according to their age, level, voice type, and their personality. Read More
