I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. While teaching is my bread and butter, I take most of my approaches from personal performance experiences. From performing in opera ("The Little Prince" 2024), musicals ("You're A Good Man Charlie Brown", "Beauty and the Beast" 2022, "Addams Family" 2023, "Into the Woods" 2024), and competitions (National Association of Teachers Singing Musical Theatre Winner and Classical Runner-up, 2024)-- I believe that physical, intellectual, and emotional passion within music creates avenues for students to engage in social responsibility, community building, and personal growth. I began teaching in college, when I began working with the Actors Training Center, a theatre training program for high school students in Wilmette. Since then, I developed my own studio of voice and piano students and now work at Allegro Music Center in Park Ridge as a piano and voice teacher. Through these experiences, I have learned about the importance of regular practice for new student. First I think it is important to get to know the student and chat about what their intentions are musically. Then I can customize a lesson plan for them which includes warming up, techniques, and repertoire. I sometimes find it helpful to discuss of elements music theory, aural skills, and reading music depending on the students desires in those areas. Each of my students learns to read music, practices sight singing, and learns solfege. In my opinion, these are the neccessary fundamentals to being a great singer AND musician! Each student also does warm ups including breathing exercises, vocal technique exercises, and vocalises. There are so many opportunities to be creative and there are also chances to not only enhance the knowledge of a student, but also to teach them how to appropriately deal with anything that comes their way. I also believe that if you are working in an educational environment whatsoever, you must be a positive role model. Students latch on so easily to adults, especially someone that they admire, so in order to guarantee their success later on in life, they must have the appropriate role models in which to do so. I had a wonderful opportunity to start teaching piano at the same place that I took piano throughout high school KD Music Arts, about 8 years ago. Since then, Ive taught piano and voice to students a variety of ageskids and adults! I love arranging my younger students favorite songs that they hear on the radio so they can play them on the piano, sometimes even playing rhythm video games on my Nintendo 3DS to brush up on their music theory skills :) I want my students to finish a lesson feeling like the possibilities that they have with music are endless.
