I am a voice teacher in the Chicago West Loop area. I am originally from Madison Wi, and I moved to Chicago earlier this year after Marrying my lovely husband, Brett. We have sang at churches across the midwest together. Generally, I like to discuss what kind of music the students are interested in studying first. Then, after vocalizing and assessing the voice, I'll start the students with English art songs or 24 Italian Songs Arias, or some classic music theater repertoire. For my younger students, I often use a balance between classical, pop and jazz music. Fabers Piano Adventures or any variety of the Faber books with a theory book is often used so that students will have a firm foundation on how music works. I don't really use method books; instead, I prefer to teach students using material that they like. There's nothing more tedious than studying music that you can't stand - it's enough to turn students off to music altogether. I want to stoke the flames of a lifelong passion, and I believe that all music has something to teach us, so I'm happy to couch the fundamentals into terms that students can understand. Read More

I do, however, expect that every student take their responsibility for practicing each week, coming prepared to lessons, and being a good student. My experience with learning was fun. Since I was learning multiple instruments it was fun to tie everything together. I could say the best part while learning was understanding theory...that part of my learning opened up many doors for me musically. I started to understand why certain notes could and couldn't be played, why and how to use different scales. Those things are the same things I try to reveal to the students when the time is right. I graduated with my Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Oberlin Conservatory in 1986. While there, I studied with Richard Miller, regarded by many as one of the greatest voice teachers of the 20th century. Millers books on singing are now standard texts in music schools all over the world. I then received a fellowship and teaching assistantship at Yale University (1986-88) while receiving my Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Read More
