For my first class with my students, I typically would get to know them in terms of their goals, experience as a singer, and get to know where they are in their pursuit of those goals they set for themselves. After which, I would do warm-up exercises, vowel, and consonant work, and establish fundamentals of vocal techniques for the desired genre. I began to teach private lessons when I was in college in the year 2005. I started in a small music shop called McKinney Music where I taught in a back storage room. I taught beginning snare drum, piano and drum set. I had an experience there where a young 7 year old student who didn't practice and it showed. Technique studies can always be improved and studied, no matter a student's age or proficiency. I try to work within the repertoire a student is interested in at first, then expanding to materials and genres the student may find interesting to help broaden the experience and knowledge a student can gain from our lessons.
