BFA in Musical Theatre from The Boston Conservatory

Overview:

I'm an encouraging and fun-loving instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of musical theatre. I graduated from The Boston Conservatory last year with a BFA in Musical Theatre. I have been studying voice since I was ten years old and have worked with numerous professors of voice and learned awesome techniques for improving vocal health and strength. I have performed in over forty musicals starting when I was twelve. One of my most recent performances was as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar.

EXPERIENCE

I started teaching private voice lessons during my first year of college in 2012. I enjoy prepping students for auditions as well as teaching proper warmups. One of the techniques that helped me the most at a young age was learning how to support my voice with my breath. Breath makes a huge difference in vocal quality and the correct breathing methods can become second nature after working on breathing exercises. It is so important to start with breath and posture while working on the voice and build up to tackling more strenuous songs.

METHODS USED

I break up lessons into three parts - warmups/breathing exercises, learning a song, and acting the song. Warmups prepare the voice to sing without any strain. I also implement vocal exercises during warmups where we work on range and quality. During the first lesson with the student, I get to know what they want to work towards in terms of repertoire and suggest a few pieces. We will typically add one or two songs per week in order to build a solid repertoire. Learning a song requires more than just the notes however, acting is so important while singing because the singer is able to add meaning to the piece and connect to the audience.

LESSON STYLE

I love teaching because singing became such an important part of my life after I started taking lessons. I think students should want to practice for the joy of it, and so try to keep lessons fun and informative. I do believe in the importance of technique, however, and so try to encourage students to do short vocal exercises daily. What is most important to me is that my students are singing pieces that they enjoy and connect with. I have hundreds of songs in my repertoire and want to expose my students to new pieces as well as helping them improve on songs they already know and love.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
