For every student I always start with the basics. What are the basics? Well, first and most important for getting you started is open chords. That along with pentatonic scales will really help to develope finger dexterity and get the student adjusted to proper hand and finger positioning on the guitar. From performing in opera ("The Little Prince" 2024), musicals ("You're A Good Man Charlie Brown", "Beauty and the Beast" 2022, "Addams Family" 2023, "Into the Woods" 2024), and competitions (National Association of Teachers Singing Musical Theatre Winner and Classical Runner-up, 2024)-- I believe that physical, intellectual, and emotional passion within music creates avenues for students to engage in social responsibility, community building, and personal growth. In addition, historical and theoretical subjects are introduced appropriately to keep the student engaged no matter their current abilities. We also have at least two public performances a year at a venue which has a high quality grand piano so the students can get used to the notion that every piano will be different and performing scales before playing their chosen repertoire will help them immensely. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
