I have been teaching for over 30 years, and I love working with children. Regular practice is important so that students can see progress and reap the rewards that come with it. I meet the students where they are at, trying to work with their particular style of learning. My lessons are based in classical music, but we learn many different styles of music as they progress. The teaching association I belong to has four festivals a year, which I encourage my students to participate in, where they perform pieces and receive constructive feedback, helping them to grow as musicians and to become comfortable playing for others. I am from a family of musicians and started my music lessons at a young age. I love playing the piano and have accompanied choirs, vocalists, bands, churches, etc. throughout my life. Other than the priceless enjoyment I have gotten out of being able to play the piano, my greatest pleasure has been teaching young and old how to play, appreciate and enjoy the piano instrument. Depending on my student's age and skill level I usually have them begin with Suzuki books, Essential Elements books, or a combination of the two. As students advance I often incorporate etudes and/or exercises by Lee, Dotzauer, Galamian, Mooney, Sevcik, Duport, and Popper. While ear training is an essential skill that I teach to all of my students, the younger a student is the more I'll have them "play by ear" instead of reading sheet music. Read More

I think music making is the most appealing part of learning to play a new instrument. This is why I try to make every new concept Iteach as appealing and as fun as possible. For example, if in day one I am teaching two notes, I like to have as much fun with those two notes by making a song or a game out of them. For beginner piano students, I start from teaching out of the Piano Adventure Series, and Theory Time books. The Piano Adventure Series is great because the song arrangements have tiered piano proficiency for beginner to intermediate players. After students work in these books, other repertoire can be added to perform for holidays and recitals. Understanding the student's interest would be my priority goal. Helping students not just playing the instrument, but also loving it, so they will cherish the time with their instruments. Having fun while learning music is always my target in teaching music. Students and parents are welcome to provide the music they would love to learn. That should keep their attention in having fun. When I start with a student, we immediately start working on sight-reading, as I believe it is a very important skill to have. Even the beginners students, all start sight-reading right off the bat, and build on the skill as they progress.
