I am an opera singer who recently returned to the US from Germany and have a passion for teaching. I received my Doctor of Musical of Arts in voice from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2016. I believe that each student requires differing methods of instruction in order to grow, so I stay adaptable in which exercises and etudes/solos I assign to meet this requirement. I am also generally happy to hear whatever a student wants to bring in if they have suggestions of their own. I think that being open to working on what a student wants to work on, at least most of the time, is instrumental in ensuring that the student stays motivated in their practicing and continues to have fun playing the trombone! Although each student learns at a different pace and of course has a different personality, one of my favorite things about teaching is seeing their faces light up when they are able to accomplish something they've been working towards. Within teaching lessons, in my experience, has a lot to do with trust. I am a positive and encouraging instructor, and emphasize proper technique, music theory, and fundamentals through a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to popular music. My students are all ages (I once had a student start at the age of 70!) and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I work with students to help them balance a practice schedule with the rest of their lives. I am familiar with many different series of method books (Faber, Bastien, Piano Town, Thompson, etc.), but will determine what the student needs based on their age and how much they know about music in general. Some school-aged children may have been exposed to music classes before they come to me. I am happy to hear about any school district that has chosen not to cut music education from its curriculum! I create my own custom lesson plans based on the needs and goals of each student. Usually, when a student first comes to my studio I listen to them sing a series of exercises and then a song so that I can get a good idea of where they are in their vocal development. I usually begin teaching fundamentals of breath and posture and resonant space in the first few lessons, but then build upon that with specific exercises and repertoire that fits each student's needs.
