In teaching my students, I prefer to teach them to "play by ear", because when they learn chords and songs, they are usually able to play a snog by memory after hearing it a time or two. I not only show them the chords, fret board, how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune the guitar; etc. but, I also issue them handouts of guitar chord illustrations, fret board charts, and chord changes with words to songs for them to practice on between lessons. During our lessons we will address correct breathing and posture and different vocalises that will strengthen and free up the voice, giving the student more power, more range and more freedom/agility.  Singing with freedom is a different path for each singer, and I will prescribe different exercises for each area of the voice we are trying to improve.  You will also be assigned songs: some classical, some musical theater and then whatever genre is your favorite. Im a retired band director of 25 years in the Dallas ISD on all levels. I enjoy teaching privately. I have a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas, and Masters of Science in Music Technology from Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis. I use the Mark Thomas flute books for beginner through the 2nd year. In the first year, I typically teach basic fundamentals of scales and playing the full range of the instrument along with basic flute literature. Once these are complete I transition into the Anderson studies and more advanced literature. The more advanced flutest would work in the Trevor Wye book series and medium advanced to advanced flute literature. Read More

The one thing I love teaching is watching my students grow. I believe music should be fun not boring having to practice 2 hours every day. I encourage students to to have fun during lessons and individual practice. I like to push my students to their limit. If the student is pushed to his/her limit, it will motivate them to work harder. As a teacher, I try not to stress rote learning but instead focus on explanations for why music works the way it does. I find that music of any genre is much easier to study if you have an understanding of the framework of what you practice. To that end, I stress technical study that works towards grooming pieces or songs for performance and make sure that my students have a complete understanding of both music and their instrument.
