I started teaching voice while at Millikin University. My first job teaching upon graduating was at the Schaumburg Academy of Music, where I taught children through adults. Other schools I taught at include Dancenter North in Libertyville, and Montessori of Hoffman Estates. I want them to know that all of their favorite songs by their favorite artists can be played by implementing the correct techniques and fundamentals. I try to instill the importance of scales and progressions, and how that connects into learning their favorite songs or even writing their own original material. In singing lessons students learn vocal techniques, musicianship skills, performance skills, and songs of their choice. Music games are played with younger students. Piano students. Piano lessons consist of technique such as scales chords arpeggios etc, repertoire, and music theory! I break up lessons into three parts - warmups/breathing exercises, learning a song, and acting the song. Warmups prepare the voice to sing without any strain. I also implement vocal exercises during warmups where we work on range and quality. During the first lesson with the student, I get to know what they want to work towards in terms of repertoire and suggest a few pieces. Once that connection is established, I like to find out the students interests and make sure a personal goal is set that we can achieve together.
