I always interview the students and set goals to know where they want to go so that all of our work is geared towards there individual success and improvement. I break up lessons into three parts - warmups/breathing exercises, learning a song, and acting the song. Warmups prepare the voice to sing without any strain. I also implement vocal exercises during warmups where we work on range and quality. During the first lesson with the student, I get to know what they want to work towards in terms of repertoire and suggest a few pieces. Praise, suggestion, praise is a big part of any teaching situation I enter. I believe that it is crucial to a student’s learning to be in a safe and positive environment. As soon as they feel uncomfortable or as if it is not okay for them to be themselves, the productivity goes down and they are not able to accomplish things to their fullest potential. I've been teaching voice and violin for the past year and a half to children and adults but I mostly tend to work with younger students from early teens well into the 20s who want to pursue music. The background for my teaching experience comes from a few different sources. In 2014-2015, as an operations director and mentor with non-profit Off The Wall Graffiti in LA, I would regularly mentor young people who were getting in trouble for doing graffiti in the streets and needed guidance and a positive way to be creative. I also believe that music in itself can be used as a means through which the world can be impacted for good.
