For beginners of any age, I begin by discussing goals, milestones, and how we will achieve them. I do use method books, but only recommend those that will be useful in and out of lessons. I keep lessons fun and engaging, and always demonstrate before expecting the student to do the same. My teaching career began nearly 20 years ago as the assistant director of a concert band for senior citizens! I was about halfway through college when a music education professor asked me if I'd like the opportunity. From there I went on to teach full time or as a clinician and many middle and high schools in the DFW area, as well as Baylor University. I have been teaching for eight years, I have taught privately, in group settings, and with students of all ages. I have found that one of the most important things to have in a student teacher relationship is trust. If a student does not trust his or her teacher than they will be less encouraged to learn and practice. I have also found that building this kind of relationship will also help students to develop a love for music, maybe not in the way that I did, but in a way that is over all beneficial to their character and life philosophy.
