Since I've observed that most younger students tend to not know what style they like, I typically place them on Alfreds lesson books. For some reason, it seems to me that students "wake up" to a much wider range of genres at age 11 I prefer to accommodate their stylistic preferences to make lessons more fun for them. I find that the most effective method with beginners is to color code things in a way that makes sense. I have stickers for this and a chart of what each means. Music is similar to math, and once the student can make proper associations in their head when looking at music or playing an instrument, the rest becomes easier. Emily recorded bass on the four time Grammy nominated album Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers.
