Once the student has grasped the basic fundamentals and note reading, I begin to introduce solo repertoire from the Suzuki String method. If a beginning student I will usually start off with working on scales and use visual tools such as books to help aid the process. While studying to complete my BA through Cal Poly Pomona, I have had the privilege of touring with Cal Poly Pomona's University Concert Choir for at least three years. I have been heavily involved with this choir for a total of 5 years, and I was appointed as Section Leader for the Sopranos for one term, which meant hard work and dedication almost paid off back then. It's important to avoid any bad habits and beginning students are lucky in that they have the opportunity to establish proper technique from the very start. As students progress, I use books such as the Universal Method and Rubanks Duets to learn to read notes and understand rhythms. I hold various Principal 'cello positions, co-founded the Polish Music Reference Center at USC with Wanda Wilk, in the 1980's; co-founded Symphony 47 with Floyd Clark and had my New American Quartet for over 18 years, which also toured England, in 1997. I performed many overseas concerts; was Yo Yo Ma's pre-concert lecturer at the Wadsworth in 1994; coached Samuel L. Jackson for his movie role as a 'cello playing cop in 2000, and performed with Herbie Hancock in a World Peace concert in 2008, with my quartet. Read More

So we study chords and rhythms, as they relate to the songs the client enjoys. I like to insert a five to ten minute practice before digging into the main lesson. This involves playing scales or running chord progressions or learning about, for example, the circle of 5ths or 4ths.
