Every student is different and learns in different manners, which makes teaching a challenge. This is a challenge that motivates and excites me. I make sure to put all my effort into adapting to every student. Overall, I set reasonable goals for each student that are challenging, yet attainable. I believe in providing positive reinforcement while pushing a student to be better. Ultimately, my goal is to transfer my love for cello and music to the student and will always find a way to do so. I have been a teacher for the last 7 years: having worked at after-school programs, I have learned how to understand the psychology involved in teaching and how to get students motivated but sparkling their curiosity based on their personal experiences. I encourage students to practice on a consistent basis for as much time as they can, but most importantly, I encourage them to listen. The art of listening is much understated in music education at times and is really what made a difference in my playing, so I like to include listening exercises that go along with technique in order for the student to develop a well-crafted musicianship. My main motivation in pursuing a doctoral degree in music is my enthusiasm for gaining knowledge and teaching. The dedication and generosity of teachers who I had the privilege to study with were not only inspiring to me, but also made me understand fundamental concepts of teaching. I strongly believe education can change lives and communities. Teaching with enthusiasm is fascinating, engaging, and a key factor to inspire students. I also believe that the ideology behind that kind of teaching is to create a quest for knowledge that never ends and will result in a consistent development for the student as a musician and as a person. As mentioned before, I learned that I have an affinity to make the music fun. It's never just work with me. I believe that a musician has done his/her job not when he/she can channel the energy of the music onto the listener. I love watching a student's face light up when they are able to play a lick or a statement that they never thought they would be able to play, or when I see the proverbial lightbulb going on atop their heads. Nothing is more encouraging than seeing students get excited about progressing and getting closer to their goals! I love to see students nail their jazz band auditions into high school or college, or seeing them get their first recording session from a major artist. Equally fulfilling is seeing beginners play their first C major scale with proper hand position and fingering! I can personally tailor my instruction style based on the student as we all learn differently, and teaching them always inspires myself to get better every day! Read More
