I am a very flexible teacher and I understand firsthand that to remain interested in learning music, a student needs to feel included in the choices regarding what they are working on. While studying to complete my BA through Cal Poly Pomona, I have had the privilege of touring with Cal Poly Pomona's University Concert Choir for at least three years. I have been heavily involved with this choir for a total of 5 years, and I was appointed as Section Leader for the Sopranos for one term, which meant hard work and dedication almost paid off back then. Since I mainly work with teenagers and adults, I like to start with Alfred's Adult's Piano Courses. I like to find music that the student is interested in and to put together solo repertoire that they enjoy playing. This can be anything from classical music to the Beatles, Jazz Standards or pop tunes. I also encourage my students to write, to record themselves and play for others. If they are aspiring songwriters, we work on their material, as well as learning songs by their favourite musicians and specific songwriting exercises, which include rhythm, melody, harmony and lyrics. As well as classical techniques such as Bel canto, I have studied modern techniques with the likes of CVT and Robert Lunte of TVS. My music leadership experience began with competitive show choir in 8th grade - voted Student of the Year - and these experiences inspired me through high school! The show choir program director appointed me tenor section leader in 9th grade and Voice Captain in 10th grade for my ability to lead voice sectional rehearsals and provide pianist accompaniment when needed.
