The methods have to suit the child and vice versa. I like to began all students by really getting to know their (and their parents') ability, history, desires, needs, wants, ect. I like to base my teaching pedagogy purely around the child, the family, and their learning skills. Everybody is different and it's my job to explore all avenues that the student wants to accomplish in their musical experience. I have taken classes and studied Kodaly, Suzuki, and various other psychological approaches to education. Read More

My teaching style and approach to guitar instruction in particular starts by first assessing the wants and needs of the student. What does the student 'want' to learn? What does the student 'need' to do to achieve these wants. What will make the student most enthusiastic about the guitar? What will keep them enthusiastic and motivated to practice? What do they love about the guitar and what inspires them musically? Read More

In my teaching I aim to first assess where the student's skill level currently stands. I focus on being able to continuously develop a student's ear, theory knowledge, techique, and sight-reading. While working in these areas, I like to connect with the student on their individual goals and what they want to work on in their lessons. My teachers from over the years would also assign me songs that I wasn't a fan of at first, but I soon learned to love from working on them. Read More

For beginner students, I use the Piano Adventure series, and for adults, I utilize Alfred or Adventure Adult books. Intermediate and advanced level students mainly work with individual books dedicated to composers from different eras. Despite having excellent resources, I always strive to personalize the approach and book selection according to each student's needs using a one-on-one customized approach to teaching. I create a yearly plan for each student I receive, which includes foundational piano lessons, preparation for competitions, and special pieces for the Christmas season. Read More
