Overview:
My main motivation in pursuing a doctoral degree in music is my enthusiasm for gaining knowledge and teaching. The dedication and generosity of teachers who I had the privilege to study with were not only inspiring to me, but also made me understand fundamental concepts of teaching. I strongly believe education can change lives and communities. Teaching with enthusiasm is fascinating, engaging, and a key factor to inspire students. I also believe that the ideology behind that kind of teaching is to create a quest for knowledge that never ends and will result in a consistent development for the student as a musician and as a person. Although encouraging students to experience and develop critical thinking is a complex challenge, it is still possible and essential. During guitar ensemble classes, the connection between a basic theoretical foundation and classical guitar technique is required in order to shape the understanding of playing a nylon string guitar with proper form. Therefore, flexibility is necessary for a teacher who is dealing with individual students or ensembles. In other words, teachers must adapt to given conditions and unpredictable situations. In fact, I have acquired many different experiences and results by teaching people from different backgrounds.
EXPERIENCE
I am a musician who has already studied in three conservatories and four universities. I have been teaching private lessons for fifteen years and group classes for ten years. I graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A) in may 2017. From 2013 to 2017, I was teaching theory, group guitar class, private lessons and guitar ensemble at UNLV. According to my experience as a teacher, flexibility and adaptation are two necessary skills in lessons/classes. In fact, I have acquired several experiences and results by teaching people from different backgrounds and I strongly believe education can change lives and communities.
METHODS USED
For beginning and intermediate guitar students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition by Will Schmid and Greg Koch. This book will cover technique, music notation, theory, repertoire, fingerboard knowledge and music fundamentals. It works for children and adults. For beginning students who are learning classical guitar, I use the Aaron Shearer's method which includes detailed lessons on theory, form, fingering, technique, sight-reading, and etc. Nevertheless, I usually use many other books for guitar lessons since I always take into consideration the needs and goals of my students. Furthermore, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire (from the guitar literature) appropriate for their level.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching is a major component of my musical life. I enjoy teaching students, rejoice at their progress, and am always on the lookout for new pedagogical approaches. Therefore, a teacher must have energy and enthusiasm to build rapport with students. My approach to teaching balances personal understanding of the student’s needs and goals, a strict approach to technique, and an artistic approach to music-making. As a teacher, I encourage students to search for creative solutions and artistic principles that are relevant to their musicianship.

Hugo is an amazing teacher! Hugo was my private lessons and ensemble teacher. I have had a few guitar teachers, but Hugo's lessons were my favorite. His lessons are fun and effective. With regular lessons, my playing advanced very quickly. I knew nothing about classical guitar, but I found myself wanting to learn more and more with each lesson/ensemble rehearsal. Hugo is very smart, patient, reliable, and experienced as a performer AND teacher. You wont regret taking lessons with Hugo!

I took classical guitar lessons from Dr. Hugo N. for about three years while he was getting his doctorate. I've taken lessons with many different instructors over the years and Hugo is by far the best for multiple reasons. He is passionate about performing as well as teaching music to anybody who wants to learn. He is effective at identifying the zone of proximal development so he is perfect for students at any level of performance. He is extremely knowledgeable about countless genres and the criticism that he provides is constructive and is given in a manner that allows the student to feel comfortable to learn from their mistakes. Along with all of that, Hugo is one of the nicest individuals that I've had the pleasure to know let alone to be able to learn from. Any issue on the guitar you may want to improve, look no further, Hugo N. will help you get where you want to go.

I took lessons with Hugo from 2015-2017. I had three years of classical guitar experience prior to taking lessons from him. During those two years we worked on etudes from various composers such as; Mateo Carcass, Fernando Sor, and Leo Brouwer, helping me improve my technique. For classical guitar repertoire we worked on pieces from composers such as Santiago de Murcia, Roland Dyens, and Jorge Cardoso all part of the standard classical repertoire. In the area of beformance he taught me visualization techniques to help with memory issues, as well as dealing with performance anxiety. He is a great teacher and I recommend him.

I started taking classical guitar lessons at UNLV with no prior background knowledge. Hugo taught me proper technique, style, and repertoire and before I knew it, I was playing pieces I didn’t think I’d be able to play within my first year of taking lessons with him. He inspired me every lesson to get better and I highly recommend him as a teacher!

I took lessons from hugo for two years. I came in knowing next to nothing about the classical guitar style, composers, or techniques. Hugo was able to teach me many things. He kept the lessons focused and efficient, and anything that was wrong, he identified and corrected quickly and effectively. He never got angry with me even if I didn't practice a thing in between lessons. You do not need to look anywhere else for an amazing guitar teacher.
