I was raised in Ohio where I spent my early years dancing. However, as I matured I realized I didn't enjoy dancing so much as I love the music I was moving too. I started on the clarinet in middle school and continued through high school. In college I picked up other instruments as I studied to become a classroom music teacher. I was also a military wife for 16 years before my husband retired from the Navy (so I moved around a lot) and I have 3 children of my own. I love helping students find a love for making music.
I have played musical instruments since I was 11 years old when I began on the clarinet. I was that child who always wanted to play everyone else's instrument too, so when I grew up I became a music teacher so that I could learn them all. I have taught music in the elementary schools for nearly 10 years and often take private students on the side. I believe that learning to love making music is the key to success. Talent is great, but I want my students to really enjoy playing their instrument.
I have worked with students at a variety of levels and will meet the their needs accordingly. I ask my students what their goals are and then build an individualized lesson plan based on their needs. We can work on music for performances or for personal growth. I want to help my students reach their musical goals. I usually teach students out of method books to begin with, and while we work through these I ask the students to help select pieces for fun that they might also want to learn for perfomance.
I believe that the secret to becoming a talented musician is to love making music. I design my lessons around the needs and goals of the students, striving to have fun along the way. I understand and want my students to realize that making mistakes is a huge part of how we learn. My students and I have fun working through the challenges they face as they strive to become better every day. I like to let my students have input into the music they are learning because it helps them feel connected to their musical goals.
