Once the students made progression in basic fundamentals, I use the Suzuki Methods Books and Solo for Young Violinists by Barbara Barber. Along with that, I introduce the students to the chamber music so that the students learn to play with others. Mulholland so successfully ran for many years, was now no longer being offered to young kids. This was in the Culver City district and at the LAUSD it was also the same issue. I was heartbroken to see that program disappear because it was fundamentally the best program available in the public schools. But for others, they would do better with a less formal approach. In all cases, the use of the ear is fundamental and primal. We will learn how to hear, and how to listen for timbres and intervals.
