My teaching style is generally laid back. I believe that a student will only work as hard as they want to, and I have little control over that. I focus more on finding out what will make the student want to work hard, rather than forcing them to study something that does not interest them. It's all about getting the student to have a positive musical experience. After that I would start with hand technique, which is 3 basic stroke patter, and how to apply them to every part of Drum set. I try to see what skills the beginning learner may already have. Then I try to attach rudimentary skills to the players natural skill set. This is my basic approach. I teach both ear training and formal theory. I also examine popular music with students to keep techniques current with current trends in music. As with methods, I do not have one lesson style.  My approach with a three year old is different than with a seventy year old. I am detailed in my critiques, but patient, positive, and creative with explanations.  My goal is for the students to learn to love and appreciate music and for them to use it not as a short term goal, but as something they can live with and enjoy for the rest of their lives.  I sets appropriate goals with recitals, festivals and examinations to both motivate and encourage students, ensuring that they have a positive experience.
