Teaching is a major component of my musical life. I enjoy teaching students, rejoice at their progress, and am always on the lookout for new pedagogical approaches. Therefore, a teacher must have energy and enthusiasm to build rapport with students. My approach to teaching balances personal understanding of the student’s needs and goals, a strict approach to technique, and an artistic approach to music-making. As a teacher, I encourage students to search for creative solutions and artistic principles that are relevant to their musicianship. Read More

I've been teaching woodwinds and strings for about 8 years now, to students of all ages and abilities. In that time, I've worked with students making their very first sounds, all the way to helping my students successfully audition for university music programs (often receiving scholarship!). My training and certification in Music Therapy gives me an additional perspective on how music and musical ideas can be used to improve and assist all aspects of life, and in particular I enjoy working with students who possess learning or developmental difficulties. One of the first questions I ask a new student is what music they are currently listening to and what piece they would like to learn. Sometimes they are shy and I don't really get an answer out of them but after they become comfortable with me I get an idea of what they want to learn. To my shocking surprise many kids from this modern era have no clue who John Lennon or Bob Dylan are and it is essential for me to expose them to all sorts of music from Bach to The Beatles to Chopin and The Cure! For beginners, I will start with no sticks in the hands at all! Just tapping on your legs with your hands and getting all of the limbs to work together is hard enough! Then we will put sticks in your hands and learn technique, and finally introduce reading music. One step at a time is the best as to not overwhelm the student. Reading music is an essential element to my teaching style and is a huge advantage when learning an instrument. Read More

Instruments: Violin Viola Music
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Violin Method (Viola version available) with occasional ear training with the piano with the Kodaly method. For intermediate and advanced students, I introduce a variety of etudes, scale books, and solo repertoire, e.g. Carl Flesch, Kreutzer, Mazas, Dont, Dounis, and Unaccompanied Bach, etc. For viola students or violinists who are looking into doubling the viola, I introduce many techniques including Karen Tuttle and Primrose Scales to help along with the transition.
