In addition to private studio teaching, both in-person and remote for 6 years, my teaching experience comes from being as an Adjunct Faculty in violin and viola for non-music majors at New York University, the orchestral viola coach at Mannes Prep Precollege Division, director of Chamber Music and violin/viola faculty at Thurnauer School of Music. My students at younger ages have passed auditions of prestigious music pre-college programs as well as school-region youth orchestra programs; college-age students have won scholarships at their colleges for music minors and double-majors. For beginning students I like to begin with a combination of Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Suzuki Method books. I find Essential Elements to be useful for learning the fundamentals of playing the instrument and music theory. However, Suzuki offers the ability for students to quickly play solo repertoire. I also incorporate learning and understanding scales for the purpose of learning fingering patterns and intonation. As students progress, I also find Rick Monney's Positions Pieces extremely valuable. Read More
Instruments: Piano
As a simple option for the young beginning students, I would choose some simple and fun step by step tutorials with fun musical accompaniment that attract them from learning like: My First Piano Adventure for 4-6 year old or Bastien Piano Basic, Alfred's Piano Library ....ect..in addition to finger exercises, basic theory, techniques and rhythms that I collect from many different arranged books by each level to get they ready for the first performance. Instruments: Piano
After assessing the student's age and experience we select a method book or repertoire. I typically suggest the Alfred books for young students. I aim to introduce my students to a variety of repertoire, (from baroque to modern music) but I also keep their goals and interests in mind. I consider music theory, ear training, music reading, and creative music-making just as essential as learning repertoire, therefore I strive to incorporate them in each lesson. Read More
