I have a few years teaching experience and I am always excited to begin working with young students who are interested in becoming musicians themselves. I focus a lot on the technical aspects of musicianship because I believe everyone has their own feeling that they bring to music and I want to give my students the tools to be able to express themselves in their own musical way. Practice is definitely important in order for students to get familiar with the instrument and different styles and I also believe that learning different styles of music tends to help students to get better at the ones they like to play. I am a huge advocate of using differentiated instruction. Each student progresses at their own pace, and I completely cater my lesson plans to each students' wants and needs. I use a system of short term and long term goals, so you will see immediate results while simultaneously working towards a more difficult long term goal. One of my main goals as a teacher is to make the student excellent at practicing. Read More

Instruments: Piano Drums

For beginning piano students, I start them with a variety of materials, beginning with John Thompson's piano books, along with stanzas of finger exercises to develop dexterity. But more importantly for me, is that I understand that people, especially now, want to start playing songs as soon as possible. So, I immediately teach them chords and scales. Weekly, I introduce a new one so they get comfortable and then get them used to moving from chord to chord. Read More

My teaching experience goes back to middle school. I didn't get paid for it but I would teach the drummers their part the ensembles and performances in the orchestra and jazz band. That way the teacher could focus on instructing the other students the different instruments. I started booking regular paid gigs after college. I would perform shows and people would ask for lessons after the gig, networking is a big part of the professional side of playing music I encourage listening to all styles of music. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
When I received the Friends of Jazz scholarship. The Grease gig also helped as well, during these times I knew it was possible to make living off of being a professional musician. It is not an easy road, but I love music so much I am willing to undergo hardships to make my dream a living.

When will I start to see results?
It depends on the ability and effort on the student. I will provide the fundamental foundation (scales, sight reading, techniques, music library, sight syncopated rhythms) to a student so they can improve at their skills. I will do my best to explain to the student why it is important to practice these difficult skills/passages/rhythms. I will do my best to ensure I give the necessary tools to all of my students so they can improve as musicians. IF the student sits down, and practices everything I hand at them, parents can expect to see results in about a week or so. The more determined a student is, the faster he/she will improve.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Jazz. There is so many ways to interpret a jazz standard, and there is an inherit beauty when you play a jazz with your close peers. You get to hear them express themselves. You can also express yourself however you like. The possibilities and styles are endless with jazz, there is so many things to be said and heard playing jazz.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I did martial arts as a kid and in high school, so I would probably want to train and teach multiple disciplines of martial arts. I would most likely end up as a Brazilian Jiujitsu instructor.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I play a little bit of piano but not enough to be able to teach or play in a public space. If you go to a university for school, and piano is not your main instrument, you are required to pick up and play piano. I love the sound of piano, I love the classical pieces and jazz piano. If I was not playing the bass, I would be a pianist.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was entirely by accident. I loved music as a kid, and I was trying to learn how to play the guitar. I was 21, and I was strumming a guitar in the garage of my friends house, his dad had told me I was strumming really hard on the guitar. He told me, I should try the bass. Ever since then, I have been obsessed with the instrument. Eventually I moved on to upright bass when I had the money and skills to play the instrument.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Writing down your schedule out (proven for me at least). Practicing your weakest area of playing first. I have also noticed that the most effective way to get the most out of your practice time is to completely focus on the task at hand. That means no social media, television, or other distractions that happens to all musicians. On top of having no distractions, another way of practicing effectively is to practice consistently and do it everyday. I believe the more daily a musician practices, the better results he/she gets. By that I mean it is better to practice everyday for an hour, rather than practicing 3-4 hours a day every other day or two. To summarize, the best advice I have for effective practice is: writing out your practice schedule, focusing first on your weakest areas, cutting out all forms of distractions, and of course, practicing everyday for a hour or less, rather than cramming three days out of the week.
