Instead of berating my students to practice, my students practice because they want to practice. My students often tell me what they have been working on from their own reading and listening without being asked, and give me suggestions on what they want to learn in their lessons. I am flexible and I adapt my method to the student. I like to start students out with learning scales right away. If you can learn the scales, it makes learning new songs so much easier. Plus, they are great excercise for building agility. I also like to use a book called "A Dozen a Day" which includes more excercies for building agility and helping students master more difficult levels of music. Read More

"Live" practice would be an ideal way to describe how I teach. I never encourage too much of one practice or rote memorization. The mind consolidates information more quickly and makes many more neural connections through variety and "new stimuli." Many practices in our culture can be boring and lack efficiency because they lack these basic principles. As educators, we really need to turn that "dead" practice into "live" practice. Read More
