I believe that each student has something unique to bring to the table, and that students should feel that they are valued because of their cultural identities, not in spite of them. I also believe that music in itself can be used as a means through which the world can be impacted for good. Bringing students to a positive outlet such as this, can bring about passion within themselves, for both music and other issues in the world, music being the way they express this passion and use it to send a message. I work very closely with every student customizing lesson plans based on their needs. From the very first lesson, we figure out his/her goals and we write them down. Then I create a lesson plan specifically suited to get them to where they want to be. I often recommend specific songs or artists they should listen to as well as certain books and practice exercises that gravitate towards reaching their goal and most importantly; true potential. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. as all students are different, I always respect that and teach accordingly. For beginner students, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements provides a simple and easy to understand method to learning an instrument. For trumpet students, I like to integrate Earl D. Irons, H. L. Clarke, Arban, Stamp, Chicowicz and Caruso studies. In addition to technique, these books offer etudes and duets. For jazz improvisation students, iRealPro, The Real Book and Jamey Abersolds ii-V-I book (Volume 3). In addition to these method books, I also like to stress the importance of sight reading; books like Alan Raphs Dance Band book and other solo repertoire provide good sight reading training. Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I choice piano since piano keys interested me with patterns. I would see the keys for keyboard and would combine every pattern I would memorize. Piano has been and will always be my favorite instrument. Every since I was ten years old I started playing fur Elise without reading, would memorize the song through the keyboard lesson and would teach kids about the song. I started growing up and realizing that notes are important with music since that's what makes the whole song up. I started getting in to music theory and from there on I moved on and established myself that I would memorize every note on the keyboard and that I would write my own musical notes on my notebook.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
One of my musical accomplishments that i am most proud of is having the opportunity to play at an elementary school in front of the school director my principal and teachers. I would play 3 songs of memory and ever since then I have brought a change in my school and in my teacher's lives. I was in the school newspaper and was published in other schools. Another accomplishment is having to play at my brother's college. I would ask his professor if I can play a song on the piano and would deny and let his other students play. I felt left out and when it was over I would get up from my seat and play everyone was amazed they looked right at me and I was just relaxed and calm. The professor called out for security but then said stop. One of my accomplishments that I will never forget.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
One of my students have had the privilege to play at a high school concert. I would teach him every day about his favorite song that he would want day would love to play. I said practice practice practice. He would look at me and feel encouraged my my words. He would start doing that everyday and as I saw him practicing I would feel glad about myself that I impacted his life. He would won a special honor nad a gold metal for his achievements I was so proud of him for making a difference in his life and just for never letting him give up on what he wanted to accomplish for his life.
