Since I had immigrated to the United States, I have joined several bands and ensembles at churches and performed at private conferences and conventions. This past spring, I ranked third place in the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) vocal competition. After I moved to Madison, I had the chance to teach college students violin lessons and coach chamber groups in high schools through the outreach program at school. I strongly recommend students to practice every day even though it is only short amount of time. Each of my students learns to read music, practices sight singing, and learns solfege. In my opinion, these are the neccessary fundamentals to being a great singer AND musician! Each student also does warm ups including breathing exercises, vocal technique exercises, and vocalises. I want my students to find enjoyment and purpose from making music first and foremost. Every student has a unique set of skills, and not every student learns the same way. I believe that something valuable can be learned from any single piece of music. Etude books, like Voxman's Selected Studies, and Rochut's Melodious Etudes are my go to for daily practice, but are not the only option available. Beginning students will start out with technique practices, while introducing solo literature when appropriate. Technique studies can always be improved and studied, no matter a student's age or proficiency. I try to work within the repertoire a student is interested in at first, then expanding to materials and genres the student may find interesting to help broaden the experience and knowledge a student can gain from our lessons. No matter the age or ability level, I help students understand that each lesson and new idea or piece we learn adds to their experience, and experiences are building blocks for our futures. Read More
