Encouraging regular practise and emphasizing proper hand and wrist placement are things that I emphasize. I like to watch and see why someone is struggling to play a song, and I am able to offer a solution. For beginner students that are younger, age 5 or 6, I will use the Faber primer lesson books. For older children, I like to use either Faber or Schaum Series music books. For adults I use either Faber or Alfred series music books. I purchase the books for the students and ask that the students reimburse me the cost of the books. I was hooked and for my Girl Scout Gold Award in high school, I ran a theater company for children of social service recipients. I use various methods to help students become independent artists and I take pleasure in discovering the most effective method to approach each student. First, I take an intellectual approach when students learn a new piece. I expect students to understand historical background of composer and piece before they actually read music notes. This approach allows students to develop appropriate stylistic interpretations and to articulate their own thoughts. I try to give each student an idea whats coming next, every few lessons or so, while practicing what their on currently. This idea is not for every student so it is a selective process I use with the brightest ones, or fast learners and good practicers.When I see a student really start to play well I gain confidence in my teaching style...but when needed I can dial it back a notch or two. For beginning students, I usually start with The Rusian School of playing, book 1, combined with some easy traditional songs. When the student has progressed, I will begin to introduce classical repertoire. I'm always trying to choose the right compositions for my students, depending on their interests. Read More
